1. Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to hold talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to reaffirm solidarity between the two countries. China’s state-run Xinhua news agency reported that Xi had arrived in North Korea. The visit is Xi’s first to the country since 2019. Xi noted that this year marks the 65th anniversary of the two countries’ signing of the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance.
2. Israel and Iran have launched military attacks against each other, raising concerns that full-scale fighting between the two sides may resume. The Israeli military said on social media on Monday that its air force carried out strikes on Iranian military sites in central and western parts of the country. Hours earlier, the Israeli military announced that Iran launched missiles toward Israel.
3. Peruvian media say exit polls from the presidential runoff show rightist candidate, Keiko Fujimori, narrowly ahead of her leftist rival, Roberto Sanchez. Peru’s electoral authority said when about 38 percent of the votes were counted, Keiko Fujimori, the eldest daughter of late former President Alberto Fujimori, had roughly 52 percent of the ballots. Sanchez, a former foreign trade and tourism minister, received about 47 percent.
