The governments of Japan and South Korea have agreed to conduct DNA tests on remains recovered from an undersea coal mine in western Japan, where a wartime accident led to the deaths of 183 people, including those from the Korean Peninsula. The Chosei coal mine in Ube City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, flooded in 1942 during World War Two. Of the victims, 136 were from the Korean Peninsula.
The US government has released details of agreements with China, highlighting economic achievements while making no mention of Taiwan. The two leaders agreed that the United States and China should build a “constructive relationship of strategic stability.”
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says the closure of the Strait of Hormuz is a global crisis, bringing devastating consequences to developing countries in particular. Guterres, who is visiting Japan, delivered a keynote speech in Tokyo on Monday at an event to mark 70 years since Japan joined the UN.
