<リスニングのコツ3>―速く読まれる単語の連続に要注意ー
個々の単語の発音、意味がわかっていても、ニュースそのものが自分にとって未知の内容、さらに、いくつかの単語が連続して、しかも速く読まれると、全く見当違いの単語だと認識してしまうことがあります。今回は「がれき」を表すdebrisと「生み出す」を表すgenerateが結びつき、debrisの-ri-の部分が強く発音されるために、筆者のノートにはregeneratedと記されています。書き取った後、half the regenerated by…となっているので、意味が不明でした。websiteのニュース記事を見て上のような英文であることがわかったのです。

White smoke billowed from the Sistine Chapel shortly after 7 PM on Wednesday, signaling a successful election. The cardinals took 2 days to reach a consensus on a successor to Pope Benedict.
Seventy-six-year-old Pope Francis is from the Argentine capital of Buenos Aires. He is the first-ever pontiff from Latin America. He was appointed Cardinal by the late Pope John Paul the 2nd in 2001 after serving an archbishop of Buenos Aires since 1997.
Pope Francis made his first public appearance on the balcony of Saint Peter’s Basilica at around 8:30 PM. He waved to tens of thousands of people who had gathered in the square below. He told the crowd he was praying for friendship, love and trust to prevail around the globe.

that節の間に他の要素（今回はallegationsは誰によって抱かれていたかが示されている）が入り込むことがあります。普通の形は以下のような例文で確認しておきましょう。
