＜文法の知識7＞---複雑な構文は少ないがー
ヘッドラインの英文は一回聞いてすぐにわかるようなものが多いですが、時に少し複雑な構文の英文が含まれることがあります。discoveredの目的語はa number of 以下、最後まで続きます。その目的語の節内の主語はa number of cyber attacks that occurred last year on the agency’s websiteで、述語動詞はcameです。翻訳という観点から日本語に訳すと上のようになりますが、通訳という観点から捉えれば、聞こえてくる順番にしか理解できませんから、「日本の警察庁には次のことがわかりました。昨年中にたくさんのハッカー行為があったのですが、それは中国からのものでした。」というふうに理解できれば十分です。

＜リスニングのコツ7＞―fで始まる単語も聞きにくいー
発音練習でminimal pairという「最小対」の練習があります。辞書にも「ある一点においてのみ対立を示す言語要素；たとえば “shin”と”sin”」と書いてあります。自分が発音をする場合の識別練習としては大変役立つ練習ですが、リスニング練習という観点からすると、たった一点の違いのみの識別練習をしても、さまざまな音声環境の下で発音される英語ニュースの聞き取り練習では不十分です。今回はminimal pairとしてはfull とfoolですが、この両者は意味も、品詞も異なるので識別はそんなに難しくはありません。むしろ、wholeに近い音になったり、fullの一部しか聞こえなかったりするので、音そのものを捉えるのが難しい場合があるのです。アナウンサーがヘッドラインを読む時には「何言ってるんだろう」と思う時でも、ニュースの本文を読む時には、アナウンサーも落ちつきを取り戻し、発音も聞きやすくなる時が多いのです。

日本の女子サッカーが決勝戦まで進んだというニュースを聞いただけでも感動していたのに、その決勝戦の相手、アメリカ合衆国に勝利するとは夢にも思っていませんでした。東日本大震災以後、日本は「これでもか」と言わんばかりに災難続きで、ひょっとすると小松左京の『日本沈没』がまさに近いと感じていた人が多くいたかもしれません。正直、私自身もそんな気持ちになりかけていました。そこにこのニュースです。「日本に希望がもたらされた！」というのが第一印象です。記事を読んで、下の設問に答えましょう。

This was the first time Japan had ever advanced to the final. The U.S. is ranked at the top of FIFA world rankings.
24 minutes into the second half, U.S. got the opening goal. But 12 minutes later, Aya Miyama tied the game. The second half ended in a draw sending the game into extra time.
At 14 minutes into overtime, Abby Wamback scored with a header and gave U.S. a 2-1 lead.
But 12 minutes into the second half of extra time, Homare Sawa pushed in another score bringing the game to a 2-2 draw that lasted until the end of the period.
During the following penalty shoot-out, the Japanese goalie, Ayumi Kaihori, succeeded in blocking 2 U.S. kicks, giving Japan its first soccer championship. (July 18)
