London hosts the Olympic Games in 2012.

Vietnam announced on Thursday that its navy will hold a joint exercise with the US Navy.

Vietnamese foreign ministry spokesperson, Nguyen Phuong Nga told reporters that US Navy ships will call at a Vietnamese port and hold a joint naval rescue drill with the Vietnamese navy.  She said the drill will promote friendship between the 2 navies.

The joint exercise is expected to be held for several days off of central Vietnam in late July.

The navies conducted a similar drill last August.

In May, warning shots were fired from Chinese ships at Vietnamese fishing boats.

Also in May, the Vietnamese government accused Chinese patrol boats of obstructing a Vietnam state-run oil company survey ship.

Political analysts say the joint drill is apparently to demonstrate the 2 nations’ resolve to push back against China, the growing power in the South China Sea. (June 24)
