＜ニュースの背景6＞－菅首相誕生―

鳩山政権が一年経たないうちに頓挫してしまいました。「政権交代」という好機を生かしきれなかったと思います。それを引き継ぐ菅政権はどうこの苦境を乗り切るでしょうか。下の設問に答えてみましょう。

Kan confirmed as Prime Minister

Japan's Diet has named Naoto Kan the nation's new prime minister. Kan is to name his cabinet next Tuesday.
   The lower and upper houses chose Kan as Japan's 94th prime minister in separate votes on Friday afternoon.
   Kan succeeds Yukio Hatoyama, who announced his resignation two days ago.
   Earlier in the day, Kan was chosen to replace Hatoyama as the leader of the main governing Democratic Party.
   Kan handily defeated his only challenger, Lower House member Shinji Tarutoko, by winning more than twice as many lawmakers' votes.
   Kan then met the leader of the People's New Party, Shizuka Kamei, and confirmed that the two parties will continue their coalition government.
   Contrary to earlier reports, the new prime minister will not name his cabinet lineup on Friday.
   The party's Diet affairs chief, Kenji Yamaoka, told reporters that Kan and Kamei agreed to seek early approval of a postal reform bill, and need time to coordinate details to deal with the issue.
   Kan plans to name Yoshito Sengoku, the national strategy minister in the Hatoyama cabinet, as chief cabinet secretary -- the prime minister's right-hand man. (June 4, 2010)

＜リスニングのコツ6＞—正確な聞き取りは音のみが頼りではない—

4月から英語ニュースが1日1回の放送となりました。ですから、毎日書き取るヘッドラインの英文は最高でも４つとなりました。このような週間をつけてから9年目に入っていますが、常に新しいニュースが入ってくるので、「これだけやればマスターできた」という感覚は全く持てません。今日は最初の書き取りでは完全に失敗したケースです。自分のよく知っている単語、callingだと思いました。でも意味が取れないのです。「～に対する要求」という意味であれば、名詞callで、その後にforがつくはずだと思っていたからです。しかし何度聞いても「コーリング」と聞こえるのです。口蹄疫で沢山の家畜が殺処分されている現実を思い起こしてみました。するとcullという単語が思い浮かんだのです。しかもmassがついています。「家畜の大量殺処分だ！」と納得して再度テープを聞いてみました。この表現でした。callingとculling。これだけを取り出し発音練習すれば、簡単に書きとれるかもしれませんが、実際のニュースの中ではそういうミニマルペアの発音練習だけでは不十分だと実感しました。
