＜リスニングのコツ3＞—音の流れの中でこそ実践訓練—
発音訓練ではよくミニマル・ペア(minimal pair)といって似通った単語のペア練習をします。coatとcourtがその１つのペアです。この両者の区別は一方が二重母音/kóut/、もう一方が長母音/kɔ:rt/ですが、実際の音の流れの中ではその差の識別は非常に難しい。雑音が全くないところで練習をすれば比較的簡単にその違いが識別できますが、実際はそお前後関係や意味から類推しているのです。それ以上に難しいのが、2つだけを比較すれば明らかに違うものが、音の流れの中では「非常に似通って聞こえる場合」があります。アナウンサーの読み方の癖も影響するかもしれませんが、実際の書き取りでは間違え、ウェブサイトの英文記事を見て初めて気づいたものがあります。cultです。「新興宗教」という意味でよく使われる単語です。書き取りノートには長らく、courtと書いてありました。

＜文法の知識―3＞―whileがニュースで使われる時には―
英語の単語は文脈によっていろいろな意味を持ちますが、英語ニュースで使われる場合はほぼ一つの意味で使われるようなものがあります。whileには「～する間」、「～のに」、「ところが一方」という意味がありますが、英語ニュースでは二つの出来事を対照的に使う場合が多いと感じています。今回は米国の核軍縮政策とロシアのそれとの対象が明確です。逆に言えば、ニュースでこの言葉を聞いた時、すぐに「対照的事例」と察知すれば内容をより正確に把握できます。

＜ニュースの背景3＞－トヨタのプリウス、走行検査を受ける―
品質が高い車が売り物だった日本の自動車、しかもその最高峰トヨタが「欠陥車」を出したということで、世界が驚きました。アメリカはカリフォルニアで走行検査を受けました。次の記事を読んで下の設問に答えましょう。
Toyota Motor and U.S. traffic safety regulators are examining a Prius that sped out of control for 20 minutes on a California freeway on Monday.
The driver in his 60s had called the highway patrol when the Prius went out of control near San Diego after he accelerated.
The car stopped after the driver applied the foot brake and emergency brake together on the advice of a highway patrol officer who had pulled up alongside it. The driver was unhurt.
The driver said the gas pedal stuck after he pressed on it, and that the car surged uncontrollably to about 150 kilometers per hour all at once.
Toyota says the Prius in question, a 2008 model, is under recall since last November to address the potential risk of floor mat entrapment of the accelerator pedal. But it says the recall notice was delivered to affected owners only this month.
The runaway Prius has yet to be repaired. (March 10, 2010)
