＜リスニングのコツ2＞—音の識別能力だけでは聞き取りはできない—
耳がよければ英語のリスニングで有利かというと「それだけではない」とはっきり言わざるをえないと思います。ある時は単語の発音の仕方を予め知っておかないと、発音とスペルが一致しない語については聞き取れません。(22)の文中のindictがその１つです。どう発音するか知っていますか。/ɪndáɪt/と発音します。そのためにも、発音記号の読み方も日頃から訓練しましょう。

＜文法の知識―2＞―動詞がすべて述語動詞とは限らない―
英語の音を聞いて学習していると聞こえてくる動詞がすべて「述語動詞」に感じられることがありますが、その形によっては他の何かを修飾する「現在分詞」や「過去分詞」であることが多いのです。(27)の文中のlisted, ending, growing, emergingには注意しましょう。それぞれfirms、year、exports、economiesにかかっている修飾語で、「東京株式市場の一部に上場されている」、「３月に終わる」、「増えている」、「{新たに}興ってきた」という意味です。結局、この文の述語動詞はbe expected to seeの部分だけです。

おそらく、日本中があの瞬間を見ていたでしょう。手に汗にぎる瞬間、残念ながら、バンクーバーオリンピックでは日本代表の浅田真央は金を取ることはできませんでした。しかし、後に行われた世界選手権では見事金を取りました。続けて２つの記事を読んで、下の設問に答えましょう。
At the Vancouver Winter Olympic Games, South Korea’s Kim Yu Na won a showdown with Japan’s Mao Asada to clinch the women’s figure skating gold on Thursday.
Kim, who was in the lead after Tuesday’s short program, gave another flawless performance in the free skate competition.
The 19-year-old pulled off all her jumps, including a triple-triple combination, and earned top marks for artistic expression and other parts of her routine.
Kim finished with 228.56 points for both her short and free skate programs, shattering her own world record score.
Japan’s Asada, also 19, missed some of her jumps but successfully landed two triple axels, with three-and-a-half rotations. She also earned high marks for spins and other elements.
Asada improved her personal best score for the short program and free skate combined, but was still more than 20 points behind Kim in finishing her first Olympic appearance with a silver medal.
The bronze went to Canada’s Joannie Rochette, who was third after the short program. (February 26, 2010)

2010 Olympic gold medalist and 2009 World Championship winner Kim Yuna of South Korea finished second.
