Hitachi says that starting next month, all employees will have one fewer working day per month
for a period of one year.
The company says the measure will mean a pay cut of 5 percent for sections making digital
appliances and auto-related equipment, and 3 percent for other divisions.
Hitachi will arrange specific terms with the union in the upcoming labor-management
negotiations.
The company expects to post a record loss of 700 billion yen, or 7.2 billion dollars, for the
business year that ends this month.
Two other major Japanese firms, Toshiba and Nissan Motor, have already introduced work

＜リスニングのコツ5＞－be said to かbe set toの識別に要注意―
「文脈に応じて聞き分けろ」とよく言われますが、文脈から判断しても（つまり内容的に、初めて聞く文の内容を識別しようとしても）難しい場合があります。ニュースではめったにbe said to beという形には出くわさないのですが、今回は「～と言われている」が正しいかったのです。今までのニュースでは「～となることが確実になった」という意味でbe set to beがほとんどであったので、そうディクテーションノートにはそう書いてしまいました。音声的な識別法は極めて難しいと思われます。-d-も-t-も口の中では同じ場所で発音されます。違いは発声法が違うだけで、音の流れの中ではこの両者は「ほぼ同じ」ように聞こえますので、益々難しくなります。

「2隻の護衛艦」という場合はもちろん、destroyersと複数形を示す語尾（－ｓ）がつきます。しかし、「2隻の護衛艦からなる派遣部隊」というふうに「2隻の護衛艦からなる」という形容詞的な語法では常に単数形となります。A two-destroyer task forceとdestroyerは単数形になります。「彼女は18歳の女子学生です。」はShe is an 18-year-old student.となります。同じようにyearが単数形になります。

＜リスニングのコツ6＞－音だけでは聞き取れないー
上の文でどの部分の聞き取りに失敗したと思いますか。「アー・マリーイング・オーバー」と聞こえた部分です。すぐ思い浮かんだ単語はmarryです。でも文脈から不適当であることがわかり、他を考えます。marです。でもこの単語は、Our picnic was marred by an ugly traffic accident.というふうに「台なしになる」という語法しか知りません。結局、「明日同僚のネイティブに聞くことにしよう」とあきらめかけました。NHKのhomepageを調べてみます。放送時間と筆者の学習時間があまりずれますと、同じ記事が見つかりません。案の定、午後9時の段階で入力されている記事の中では見つかりませんでした。そこで、最後の手段として行ったことは、yahooで検索してみました。明確に聞こえた部分を入力してみたのです。Japanese cabinet ministers, over possible responses to North Korea’s missile launchと。するとNHK World Newsとして探していた記事がずばりあるではありませんか。このようにしてわかったのがmullingだったのです。またしても-r-と-l-の識別ができませんでした。こうして筆者の音声辞書には「マリー」に近い音の動詞はmarryとmullingが入力されたのです。

＜リスニングのコツ7＞－わかっちゃいるけど間違えるー
5年以上も毎日ディクテーションをやっているとある音の流れが自分の思い込んでいるものと食い違うことを体験的に学んでいます。その1つがandとinの識別です。(51) の最初の書き取りで「いつもの間違い」をしてしまったのが後半部分―and abandon its nuclear program－です。in abandoning its nuclear programと書いてあるのです。この類の間違いはいっぱいしてきました。ですから間違えた直後は「絶対間違えんぞ！」と自分に言い聞かせているのですが、久し振りにでてくるとその強い意志も完全に弱っていてまた同じ間違いをしてしまいました。正しい箇所を確認した後、テープで再度聞きなおしてみると確かにそう聞こえます。間違えた原因は、音の流れの中ではinとandの識別は意外に難しいという点と、itsの-i-の音が前のingへの誘因となった感じがします。何度聞いても、ここの差異は微妙で、音だけでは識別が難しいように思われます。

＜リスニングのコツ8＞－なぜここにwasが来る？－
(57)の英文を目で追って、どの部分が聞きとりと難しいと思いますか。いつものように聞きとりを試みて、「今日のところは簡単だ！」というのが第一印象です。でも一カ所、文法的に納得がいかないところがあったのです。projectionsをなぜwasで受けるのかわからなかったのです。最初の聞き取りではprojections for 2009 was global economic growth turning negativeと書いてあるのです。Websiteの記事で確認した時、自分の「リスニング力」の足りなさにまたしても愕然としたのです。wasではなく、withだったのです！ではなぜ、withがwasに聞こえたのでしょうか。『ジーニアス英和大辞典』によれば、米語用法における発音には /wәð/がのっています。ちなみにwasは/wəz/です。アナウンサーによっては大変似 なるためには、私たちが「音声辞書」を内蔵していく必要があるのです。今回のような経験をしながら、「wasとwithは、特に日本人にとっては非常に似通った発音になる」事実をエントリーさせておきたいと思います。

単独でcanとcan’tの練習をしている限りは全く問題ないように思われますが、自然な音の流れの中で聞いているとこの両者の識別は意外に難しいのです。案の定、筆者のディクテーションノートでは最初、canと書いてあるのです。they can block its nuclear progress.イランも世界からのプレッシャーに屈して核開発に関して方針を変えたのかな、と早合点をしてしまいました。しかし、ニュースの詳細を聞いていたら、今まで通りの方針でした。そう理解して再度テープを巻き戻して聞いてみると、確かにcanとは異なる「少し長めの音」が聞こえます。最後の-t-の音は本当にかすかな音で、意識して聞いていないと聞き逃してしまいます。
