<文法の知識３＞―付帯状況を表すwithの用法―
内容的には一つの文に匹敵するものを節ではなく、句で表現する用法です。節と句の簡単な復習をしておきましょう。節はその中に主語が含まれ、それに続く動詞が主語の人称によって変化しうる場合です。句は意味上の主語は含まれますが、動詞が入っていても主語によって変化しません。動詞は普通、過去分詞か現在分詞となることが多いのです。（２７）の後半部分はas the key TOPIX index closed at its lowest level in 25 yearsという節を句で表現した形になります。

Two Japanese films won Academy Awards this year, one for the best foreign language film and the other for an animated film.
The ceremony for the 81st Academy Awards was held in Hollywood on Sunday.
The movie “Okuribito”, or “Departures” was directed by Yojiro Takita, and stars Masahiro Motoki. It depicts the dignity of life and the love of family through the eyes of its hero, whose profession is to make up and dress dead people before placing them in coffins.
In accepting the award, Takita thanked the Academy and all those who helped him in the film. He said this was a new “departure” for him, playing on the English title of the film, “Departures”.
The film was the first Japanese film to win the Oscar for foreign language film. Eleven other Japanese films have so far been nominated for this category since it was established in 1957.
Another Japanese film, “Tsumiki no Ie”, or “La Maison en Petits Cubes”, won an Oscar for the best animated short film.
The director of the 12-minute silent fantasy, Kunio Kato, expressed thanks for all those that supported him.
At this year’s Academy Awards, “Slumdog millionaire” swept 8 categories in the Academy Awards, including best film and best director. Kate Winslet won best actress for her performance in “The Reader”, and Sean Penn earned his second Oscar for best actor in “Milk”.

上の文を初めて聞いて、一番聞きとりにくかったのは意外に冒頭のat a という部分でした。Websiteの記事をダウンロードして全文を確認してしまってから聞けば、確かに難なく聞けるのですが、最初ここがof a と言っているのか、at a と言っているのかはっきりしませんでした。Ministers、World Trade Organizationははっきりと強く発音されますが、この部分は「音の谷間」になり、弱く、小さく発音されるからです。しかもatとaが結びついて発音されるからです。同じ文の中ではcriticized the、in aという部分も同じように難しいと思います。

＜リスニングのコツ4＞－遅さの技法―
英語の表現を体得するのにかなり時間がかかる時があります。今回、loss-makingという表現を習得するにはかなり時間がかかりました。(38)の文を聞いた時から、「赤字に苦しむ」という意味だろう、とは想像できていたのですが、lost-makingなのか、last-makingなのか、音だけを頼りにしていると釈然としません。lostかlastかどちらかだ、と思いこんでいました。一緒に働く、ネイティブの同僚に話をしました。「スウェーデンの自動車会社で今経営破たんを起こしているサーブといかいう会社について」(Do you know an automobile company in Sweden, which is named Saab? I know it is financially troubled, and as far as I have heard the headline of the news for yesterday, it sounds like “lost-making” or “last-making”.)すぐに答えが返ってきました。”loss-making! Nothing else.” 辞書で確認しました。確認した後で、意味を考えてみれば、確かにlost-makingはおかしい。「損失を作る」で「赤字を出す」。納得しました。もうこの表現を聞き間違えることはないでしょう。
ところで、みなさんは英語の表現を覚える時、「早く覚えること」が一番いいことだと思っていませんか。良さそうに聞こえますが、私たちの記憶は案外、いろいろな経験を積みながら、ゆっくり覚えることを期待しているかもしれません。時には「遅く覚えること」が功を奏するかもしれませんよ。
