An NHK poll shows the disapproval rate of the Cabinet of Prime Minister Taro Aso stands at 71 percent, up 6 percentage points from last month.
NHK phoned 1,796 people nationwide aged 20 or above over the weekend. Sixty-two percent responded.
Among the respondents, the approval rate for the Aso Cabinet was 20 percent, down 5 points from December.
Twenty-two percent of those surveyed expressed support for the government’s plan to distribute cash benefits totaling more than 22 billion dollars to help shore up Japan’s economy. But 61 percent were opposed to the idea.
Thirty-three percent of the respondents showed understanding for Aso’s intention to raise the consumption tax rate in 3 years’ time if the economy has improved by then. But 61 percent were opposed to the idea.
Asked what would be the ideal form of government after the next general election, 24 percent said a coalition centered on the Democratic Party, while another 24 percent said a grand coalition of the Liberal Democratic Party and the Democrats. Twenty-one percent said a coalition centered on the LDP.
Asked who would make a better prime minister after the next election, 12 percent said Aso, 25 percent said Democratic Party leader Ichiro Ozawa, and 54 percent said neither. (January 13, 2009)

＜文法の知識2＞―過去完了はどういう時に使われますかー
リスニングに強くなるためには、異なる音の識別能力をつけることが先決であると考えがちですが、連続する音の中では異なる音の区別もそう簡単ではありません。上記の(12)の例文では前半にhas protestedという現在完了が登場し、後半にhad agreedと過去完了が登場しますが、筆者の最初のディクテーションでは、つまり音だけを頼りに書き取りをしている段階では共に現在完了で書いてあるのです。意味を考えれば、当然過去完了でなくてはならなのですが、意識をしていないとこういう間違いをしてしまうのです。

過去5年以上、NHKの英語ニュースを聞いてきましたが、同じアナウンサーが発音する場合でも、ヘッドラインを読む時と本文中では、聞き取りやすさの度合が違うということを発見しました。(14)の英文では、同じ日の2時のニュースではswept throughがはっきり聞き取れませんでしたが、6時のニュースでは明確に聞けました。またmany of whomは最初に書き取ったmany of themが影響してか、Websiteの記事を見て初めて気づきました。
